Oooh!  An infra-red heat gun (love techy things, typical man!)
Seriously, many thanks Emily, either of those hot ideas might well work.
Next time I have a case with puttied glass, there MAY be less swearing
than usual.

Another heat source which might work better than a solder iron is a heat
gun
- one with temperature control. If you warm the glass first (maybe keep
a fan heater on it?) then you won't have the hot/cold shock factor which
is likely to make the glass crack. Steinel make very good electronic
variable temp. controlled guns.
