Last night I staged a play at the British Science Festival in Surrey that might interest people on this listserv.

It's called 'The women after the soul of William James'. The play takes place in London in 1870, when a young William James, recently graduated from medical school, is invited to tea by Harriet Martineau, the liberal publicist who translated Comte's work into English and is now in old age. They are subsequently joined by two women of the younger generation, Clemence Royer, who is Darwin's French translator, and Helena Blavatsky, the Russian psychic and theosophist. In the play, James is trying to find himself by considering the women's views on medicine, evolution and other political and scientific issues surrounding the mind-body problem. It is long before he became the founding figure in American psychology and philosophy for which is best known today.

You can find out more about the play, including the script and some nice pictures, by checking out my blog: http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/swfuller/entry/new_play_three/ <http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/swfuller/entry/new_play_three/>

Please distribute to other listservs that are likely to find this of interest.
