Marshall
Breeding’s assessment, in his 2009 LMS Marketplace Review published
Library Journal in April, is that, ‘Open Source systems such as
Koha and Evergreen have entered the marketplace as routine
options.’ That was a mainly US perspective although open source LMSs
are having a significant impact in other countries such as France. How
soon before Open Source Library Management Systems become routine in
UK public and academic libraries? Whatever your views it’s worth
keeping up with the current state-of-play.
A useful short seminar on Open
Source library systems is taking place in Manchester on Thursday 1st October 2009
from 10.15 – 14.00. It will be in the 2nd Floor Committee Room,
Manchester Central Library, St Peters Square, Manchester, M2 5PD.
The seminar is being run by PTFS-Europe who support
the implementation and development of the Koha and Evergreen Open Source Library
Management Systems. This particular seminar will focus on the Evergreen system.
It promises to be a useful event.
