I would be particularly grateful if people would not advertise too many
very local events to the whole list, don't mind one offs, but regular
postings are wearing

Re: full inboxes

This issue was indeed discussed at length some months ago but I disagree
that "most people saw the sense in all replies going to the group", there
appeared to be no clear consensus, as indeed there couldn't be without
conducting a formal survey in which most people take part. What was clear
was that there were a significant number of people who did not like to get
all these generally irrelevant, to them, emails appearing in their
inboxes. I agree wholeheartedly with Martin Bazley, and do not recommend
setting your message rules to divert GEM list emails to a separate folder.
This does nothing to remove the issue of dealing with the emails, merely
stores them somewhere else until you do deal with them. You then either
spend the same amount of time going through them all or you delete them,
in which case you might just as well block all GEM list emails (or just
not join the list). The key point is that it is not necessary to reply to
all senders. The original request goes to all members: Good. That is the
point of the list. If you have something useful to say, say it to the
poster. If you are interested in the replies, say so to the poster, who
can then let you have the responses. If the issue seems to be of general
interest, the poster can compile the responses and circulate them. None of
this requires replies to all senders. Enough already. (And please read
Martin's response, it makes much sense.)
