THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES

International Conference

Brussels, Hotel Metropole, 22 – 23 October 2009

CALL FOR PAPERS

Social Sciences and the Humanities have an important mission in the knowledge society and for evidence-based politics. However, their role is not always appreciated and their inputs are not always effectively used. There are discrepancies between the potential importance of social science knowledge and the comparatively low attention they receive from politics, other scientific fields and the public as a whole.

How can the Social Sciences and the Humanities better address the needs of society? This is the key question that will decide their future. To better contribute to societal needs, the Social Sciences and Humanities will have to advance their understanding of what society’s needs are; explicate their contribution; and specify whether and to what extent this knowledge can be provided.

This conference is the final conference of the SSH-FUTURES project commissioned by DG Research in the 6th Framework Programme. The project was accomplished by an international consortium lead by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Comparative Research in the Social Sciences (ICCR Vienna).

The conference will be a two-days event held in Brussels. At the first day, the members of the SSH-FUTURES consortium will present the results of their study and discuss the potential recommendations and conclusions. The second day will be devoted to the external papers and the results of similar projects.

Abstracts should be a minimum of 500 words long and include the full coordinates of the author(s) (postal address, fax, telephone and e-mail). The deadline for the submission of abstracts is September 30, 2009.

The authors of papers selected for presentation will be contacted in the first week of October. They will be expected submit a full versions of their presentation in electronic format no later than January 2010.

Selected papers-givers will be reimbursed for their travel and accommodation costs for participation at the workshop.

For further inquiries and/or the submission of abstracts, please contact Louise Beltzung at [log in to unmask]

Please feel free to pass this announcement on to anybody who may be interested in the workshop.
