Fair and Free Elections Foundation Afghanistan

The Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan is an independent and umbrella organization which has been established by a number of Afghan civil society organizations to ensure free democratic elections in Afghanistan. Its website provides information on its aims, membership and activities. It includes press releases and some full text reports. These include assessments of the state of democracy, extent of political corruption and conduct of parliamentary and presidential elections.

Elections 2009: United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan Flickr

This is an interesting use of web 2.0 social networking site Flickr by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. It provides free access to over 500 UN photographs relating to the 2009 provincial council and presidential elections in Afghanistan. They include scenes from UN organised debates and civic education programmes as well as scenes from the campaigns and polling. Descriptions and copyright information is provided.

Nepal Human Development Report 2009: state transformation and human development

This site provides free access to the full text of the report published in 2009 by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). ISBN: 978-99946-916-2-3. The 198 page report provides a wealth of information and statistical data on the health, social welfare and economic development of the state of Nepal. The 2009 report also offers insight into how recent political crises and transformations in the region have impacted on social, economic and political development and the challenges faced in the future.

Digitale Krantenarchief Aalst
Digitale Krantenarchief Aalst is a joint project by the Documentatiecentrum en Archief voor Daensisme en Hedendaagse Geschiedenis van de Denderstreek (D.A.D.D. vzw ) and the Stadsarchief Aalst. It is working to digitise and provide free online access to a large number of newspapers from the Belgian region of Aalst. They include over 80 titles in Dutch, Belgian and Flemish generally covering the period 1850-1930. They therefore constitute a rich source of information on the social, political and economic history of Belgium and European history as a whole during this period. They include coverage of Belgium federal government, election, Belgium Empire and imperialism. The site may be browsed or searched. Copyright and technical information is provided.

Cambridge spies: BBC Archive
This site provides free access to a collection of online archive films and recordings from the BBC relating to the history of the exposure of the Cambridge spies: The Cambridge Five, also known as the Cambridge Four, was a ring of spies (comprised of Kim Philby; Donald Maclean; Guy Burgess; Anthony Blunt and John Cairncross) who passed information to the Soviet Union during World War II and into the early 1950s. Users to the site can access news programmes, documentaries and interviews from the BBC TV archive. They include coverage of the exposures, eye witness accounts of events and reaction from the 1950s-1990s. Copyright and technical information is displayed on the website.

Open textbooks: Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources
The Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources is a US based organisation which seeks to identify, create and make available open access full text resources suitable for use by community college students and faculty. This section of the website offers links to free textbooks covering a range of arts and social science subject areas. Topics covered include anthropology, politics, economics, business, computer science. Most materials are designed for American college students.

UFO files: National Archives
This site is maintained by the UK National Archives. It provides access to information, catalogues and some declassified U.K government documents relating to sightings and investigations of UFOs (unidentified flying objects - such as alien spacecraft, close encounters and bright lights) in the UK. The materials largely cover the period 1981-1996. They include materials relating to Ministry of Defence investigations of incidents. The site also offers guides to the collections, historical background on U.K government interest and lists of files. Some more recent items may be downloaded free of charge. Access to other materials requires payment.

Digital Archive For Chinese Studies

The Digital Archive For Chinese Studies (DACHS) is maintained by the University of Heidelberg in 2003 it was joined by The Sinological Institute at Leiden University. It provides free access to a growing collection of resources relating to the social and political study of China. They include full-text documents, newsletters, journals, government publications, films, email discussion lists, statistics and links to key websites. Topics covered include politics, culture and the economy. There is also strong coverage of specific events such as the SARS pandemic; developments in the Chinese Communist Party, Tiananmen Square, human rights in China, Chinese foreign policy towards Taiwan and Tibet. The materials include Chinese language documents. All resources are described in catalogue records. The database can be searched or browsed. Note that while records can be displayed, access to full-text requires researchers to register with the university. At present this service is free.
