> This site provides free access to the full text of the report by the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee which was published as HC 302 session 2008-9 in August 2009. The 321 page report analyses the security situations in Afghanistan and Pakistan and UK foreign policy towards the region, making critical comment and suggestions for future reform. Topics covered include the role of the international community, the UK mission to Afghanistan; American foreign policy since the election of the new president in 2009 and the relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The report also contains a report of the findings of a Foreign Policy Committee visit to the region in April-May 2009.

> The PBS Digital Learning Library is maintained by American broadcaster PBS. It provides free access to a collection of materials designed for teachers. These include online documentaries, video films, audio files, images and associated lesson plans and learning materials. The subjects covered include the arts, humanities, science/ technology and the social sciences. Key social science areas are American history and politics, society and culture. All materials are graded according to age. Although the site is designed for school children, the ability to access online film clips makes it interesting for older students. The site also contains discussion forums for lecturers. Copyright and technical information is offered online.

It includes issues relating to the H.R. 1 the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. A key feature is a number of indexes which enable the tracking of historical trends. They include: presidential, ratings, confidence in American government and politics, Congressional approval ratings and a Congressional Recovery Index which contains indicators monitoring delivery on promises and the extent of the recovery. > This site provides free access to the full text of the report published by the Joint Committee on Human Rights as HL Paper 152 HC 230 in August 2009. The 140 page report analyses allegations that the UK was involved in the torture of alleged terrorist suspects in Pakistan and elsewhere. It includes coverage of obligations to prevent torture in international law and specific case allegations including those of Binyam Mohamed, who was released from Guantanamo Bay. Also covered are issues relating to UK government accountability.

> Capitol Words is an interesting project of the Sunlight Foundation, which seeks to use new technology to make the activities of the American Congress more transparent and accountable. It is providing visual mappings of the most frequently words used in the Congressional Record, the official record of the proceedings and debates of the United States parliament. It enables users to map trends in word usage in both houses, by specific members or parties. This offers insight into political activity. The website provides information on the methodology used.

> This site is a special project of the Centre d'études du 18e siècle of the University Lumière in Lyon. It provides free access to a full text collection of French language government gazettes from 18th century Europe. The project is ongoing, adding items on a rolling basis. Titles currently available include La Gazette de Leyde (1775-1789) Le Courrier d'Avignon (1775-1778). The Gazettes are a good source of information on 18th century European political history. They cover key events such as Empire formation, wars, the role of Russia and Turkey at this time. They also offer insight into contemporary understanding and images. The site includes links to other historic newspapers. All information is offered in French only.>

> The CAS Academic Portal is maintained by the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia, (CAS) an independent non-profit institution based in Bulgaria which seeks to promote scholarship and academic cooperation in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Although, it is intended to be international in scope, the site is especially useful for tracing information about Bulgarian and East European recent and ongoing research. The English language version of the site currently offers, news, lists of forthcoming events and conferences plus free access to some online papers and reports. These cover all areas of the social sciences, history and humanities. Access to full text requires registration. Some materials are offered in Bulgarian only.

> This excellent directory of links was created by the University of Michigan Documents center to direct students and researchers to key websites relating to American elections. Most are available on the Internet free of charge. Coverage includes campaign finances, advertising, public opinion polls, and election data. Users are directed to useful websites for tracing articles, election statistics, government papers and key organisations. All materials have added descriptions written by specialist librarians.
