Forthcoming Westminster Briefing Education Events

Dear Colleague,

I enclose details of forthcoming Westminster Briefing education services events to be hosted by the House Magazine in Westminster over the coming months.

A ‘NEET’ Solution in Difficult Times: Backing Young Britain to Avoid a Lost Generation - 13th October 2009

Fuelled by the economic downturn and historically high unemployment rates, the number of teenagers out of school and out of work has risen significantly, with the most recent figures showing that 19.1% of 16-24 year-olds are now classified as “NEET” (not in education, employment or training). Delegates at this Westminster Briefing will have the opportunity to examine the issue of NEETs and consider the government’s response and measures which can be taken locally.

The Apprenticeship Skills, Children and Learning Bill is the final piece of the jigsaw to provide opportunities for all young people to continue to participate in education and training up to the age of 19. School Inspections: Will the New Framework Deliver? - 20th October 2009

The new “Framework for the inspection of maintained schools in England from September 2009”, published in June 2009, has been designed to provide parents with information about schools, keep the Secretary of State informed about the work of schools and promote the improvement of individual schools and the education system as a whole. Delegates at this Westminster Briefing will have the opportunity to consider the impact these new developments will have on the future of school inspections, examine the changing expectations of central government, and discuss what more needs to be done to ensure the credibility and effectiveness of the inspection system.

Your Child, Your Schools, Our Future: What Does the White Paper Really Mean? - 12th November 2009

The White Paper sets out the government's latest set of proposals for schools, which will be taken forward in an education Bill that is expected late in the autumn. There are major sections on “accredited school groups”, personalised learning, schools working in partnership, stronger accountability measures, targeting resources at children from deprived backgrounds and redefining the school workforce. The proposals have received a mixed response from the schools sector, which questions the need for any additional legislation. Delegates at this Westminster Briefing will have the opportunity to consider the some of the key issues for local authorities, schools, parents and pupils.
