I have found that the register cross tab thing Compass do is pretty limited. It doesn't show tutor info for a start. I do have a Access database which makes an exact copy of our manual registers in Excel which if anyone is interested in having I will make available. We use it for printing out all our online registers at the end of the year (auditor req ????) and replacing any manual ones that get lost. If you then press the browser "Back" option you will return to the chosen register. In this way a lecturer can flip into historical view whilst marking each individual register.
