News snap

Spiralling towards the earth
One wing torn off the other unable
To keep it aloft
doing half a job
making it half fly
and turn in on itself
its corkscrew grace
wringing out every bit of strength it had
until it had no more air or strength
to defy the ground

it is inevitable I supose
the loss of life calculable
names on a loading manifest
translate into dna traces
near empty coffins returned to families
with body parts and occasional possessions
pulled from the sky

someone found birds' feathers
sucked into its dead engine
small bones crushed and burned
but enough to bring the plane
back down to earth

around the crash site
birds flock
and pick over the debris
