Dear Ken, We even accept dissertations in English and you are always very welcome for a Moscatel! Or did you think that you wouldn't have to write about your work... But alas, we will only award Doctorates in Design (for the time being) not in contemporary art. My point and the OECD’s is that probably it is more useful and interesting for the Society in general if Art and Design higher education institutions award DFAs, DAs or DDes rather than PhDs. Except for those that will correspond to the build up of a Design Culture, namely those on Theory and History (what I would call under my cultural background real Philosophy Doctorates). I really don’t know if the current PhDs in Design aren’t in fact PhDs in Engineering, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Communication Sciences, History of Art, Cultural Studies with Design related subjects? My guess is that the most are. When I think about a Philosophy Doctor in Design (in the Anglo Saxon frame) and consequently in a PhD in Design and asking what this Philosophy should be, I think that its basic characteristic ought to be a Philosophy of Doing. And a Philosophy of Doing is normally developed by doing something. It is not irrational to say that the true Knowledge about Doing is only attained or achieved by Doing. Also as a “manager of knowledge” in a Higher Education Institution in Design that prepares young and not so young adults for doing something I would like to have doctors in the philosophy of doing. Not that I don’t like to have doctors in science in specific areas but the engine of my Faculty should be the doctors in the philosophy of doing. I would even prefer these to the practitioner professionals from which I don’t know if they developed a philosophy of doing and therefore being able to transmit articulated directions on Doing. My final point is that I will greet with joy anyone that come to me saying "I did my PhD by project".
