We are trying to identify a wall-painting that was uncovered and rescued from St Teilo's church in south Wales, before it was dismantled and rebuilt at St Fagans: National History Museum, near Cardiff. It was located on the north wall of a chapel which was accessed directly from the chancel. It depicts a standing male figure, virtually life-size, facing the viewer. The head (and any headwear) is missing. He holds a rod or staff which slopes diagonally (from our top right to bottom left) in front of him. It is not clear whether this is simply a plain staff, or one with a cross on top, or a crozier. If the latter, the figure could be a bishop. He appears to be wearing a full length costume (white with folds picked out in red/black), but wears a short (dark red) cope across the shoulders. There was a second figure within an adjoining panel, again possibly wearing a short-ish red cope. The paintings probably date from circa. 1500-30.
It has been suggested that our man could be a cleric (because of the short cope), but could he be a bishop? We also wonder whether it could be a representation of St Teilo (patron saint of horses and apple trees and one-time bishop of Llandaff), or, if a cleric, that of Paulinus who was his (and Dewi/St David's) tutor when he was a young man?
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Gerallt
