DEVELOPING YOUR MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS, Wednesday, 16th

The first few years of a new manager's working life involve developing a range of basic management skills and techniques, and developing confidence in putting them into practice. Experienced managers sometimes find that their management skills and techniques become static. In today's fast-changing environment it is essential that all managers continue to develop their knowledge and skills, and this workshop provides the opportunities for experienced managers to review their current management and leadership skills and identify ways of improving them. The workshop covers a range of topics and themes that are in demand by experienced managers. Delegates will have the opportunity to learn a range of management and leadership skills and techniques. This course is designed to give experienced managers the opportunity to develop their managerial skills and practices and build their confidence in dealing effectively with more demanding situations and projects. It will also enable them to become more strategic in their thinking and actions in the workplace.

WEB 2.0: AN OVERVIEW, Thursday 17th

The phrase ‘social software’ is often used to collectively describe web 2.0 applications; social software users are well informed, undertaking the roles of search specialist, critic and even publisher. Outsiders do not know how information is being communicated, so it is hard, if not impossible, to find what is needed, or even to be aware that it exists. This one day event explains what is meant by web 2.0 applications, and looks at using shared authoring tools, weblogs, rss, wikis, media sharing software, tagging, social networking and mashups within the context of an information management environment. No prior use of web 2.0 is needed, but familiarity with a web browser would be useful.  Further details: http://www.aslib.com/training/5/03.html

BRITISH COMPANY LAW, Tuesday 22nd,

'Very important, but far too difficult for non-specialists' is how company law is typically viewed. This course distils the key legal principles which govern corporate activity for those who lack the time to follow lengthy conventional legal courses. It also goes beyond setting out the formal legislative framework to examine how these rules are applied in practice in British companies, featuring copious real life examples and looking at actual company documents. The course also identifies sources for researching companies and their directors.

OVERCOMING THE “DARK SIDE” OF INFORMATION, Thursday 24th,

Suffering from information anxiety, information overload or even infobesity? Want to avoid information avoidance? Are you, or your users, suffering from the paradox of choice, and are you satisficing badly as a result? Would a dose of digital literacy help?  In today`s information environment, where some information on any given topic can usually be found  quickly and easily, new problems have emerged. This course gives an overview of these `information problems and pathologies`, considers how real and how serious they are, and offers advice on overcoming them.   The course is suitable both for those who want to deal better with information themselves, and for those who want to help their users do so.  Further details: http://www.aslib.com/training/4/23.html

HOW TO MOTIVATE YOUR PEOPLE THROUGH EFFECTIVE STAFF REVIEWS, Tuesday 29th

Increasingly, line managers are expected to carry out performance reviews of their staff. Effective performance reviews can lead to motivated staff and improved performance. Poor reviews have a negative effect and can lead to demotivated and unhappy teams. This course will give you the tools you need to carry out an effective review. The course takes a competency based approach to managing staff performance. Further details: http://www.aslib.com/training/2/12.html

CLASSIFICATION PRACTICE, Wednesday 30th

If you have some experience of subject indexing, but need guidance or practice or want to refresh knowledge gained some time ago, this course will give you the skills needed. Participants are invited to bring typical material from their collections to form a group of items that can be considered in the practical sessions. Where an in-house scheme is used, it may be appropriate to bring a copy of the scheme to the course. Major themes throughout the course are your users, your collection and tailoring the approach to meet their needs. A pre-enrolment form is circulated prior to the course to ascertain the specialised indexing topics of interest to their participants. As far as possible the practical exercises will relate to these topics.  Further details: http://www.aslib.com/training/4/04.html
