This was in the days when it was possible for a Very Distinguished Librarian indeed to tell me that, apart from juniors studying for exams, there was no need for Medical Libraries in general hospitals - all the real medicine was practised in teaching hospitals, mostly in London, of course. Perhaps all those evolutionary false starts had their uses, after all.
