italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

Dear List Members,

You are all cordially invited to a research seminar given by Professor Tom Means, entitled: ‘Multiple Intelligences Theory and Interlanguage-stretching activities as part of a task-based empirical pedagogy in the teaching of Italian as a foreign language’, on Thursday 17th September at 5 pm in Lecture Theatre 4, Strathcona Building, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2TT

The session will introduce the concepts of Multiple Intelligences Theory and of task-based instruction. It will then move on to a discussion of the concept of “Interlanguage-stretching” and review selected data from a longitudinal-comparison study that examined the effectiveness of task-based vs. traditional instruction of Italian. The structure of tasks uniquely stretches students' interlanguage and fluency.  It will finally discuss an “empirical pedagogy” which can usefully guide instruction and measure progress.

Tom Means is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Italian at Marlboro College, Vermont, USA

Professor Means has kindly agreed to include Birmingham in his visit to the UK to attend the 3rd Biennial International Conference on Task-Based Language Teaching, ‘Tasks: context, purpose and use’, which takes place 13-16 September 2009 in Lancaster (see http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/events/tblt2009/index.htm)
