PANEL PROPOSAL

Memory and Identity. The political and Existential Cinema of Nanni Moretti

Nanni Moretti's cinema is highly personal and eccentric in the way the director
presents it to his public. Some have also called Moretti's cinema narcissistic.

The centre position of director/actor N. Moretti in his films is due not only to
the fact that he started to make cinema as an autarchic director outside the
canonical system due to his political stance that he has maintained throughout
his career and life to date, but also because he uses his own persona as a
metaphorical vehicle for his art. This session on Nanni Moretti's cinema aims
at developing reflective awareness and analytical skills in relation to
'problems' (aspects, dimensions) of Italian but also European identity in
connection with the cinema of Moretti in the last thirty years. This session's
aim is to explore concepts and mechanisms involved in the formation/loss of
historical collective identity as such through Moretti's cinema. Particular
topics may include: concepts of culture and identity; identity and language;
collective memory; icons of identity; historiography and myth; ideology and
identity; political institutions and national identity; Self and Other.
Abstracts on any of the above topics are welcome, either focussing on Moretti's
cinema, or on comparative analysis of Moretti and other directors.
