Good news for a change! Tom McLellan confirmed as head of the ONDCP. At last we have a scientist with a genuine track record in the addictions (and an honourable reputation for converting the evidence into practitioner-friendly tools) advising the US President. Now that can only be good.

A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D. Confirmed as ONDCP Deputy Director

Constance Pechura, Ph.D. Takes the Reins at TRI

Philadelphia, August 7, 2009: The U.S. Senate today confirmed the Obama/Biden Administration's appointment of A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D. to be Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). The vote clears the way for McLellan to assume second-in-command leadership of national drug control strategy, and formalizes the succession of Constance Pechura, Ph.D. as leader of the Philadelphia-based Treatment Research Institute (TRI).

McLellan co-founded the independent, non-profit TRI eighteen years ago as a research and development organization transforming the results of its research into tools for practitioners, policy makers, and parents. Dr. Pechura has been TRI Executive Director since 2007.

"The nation has gained a leader who has been at the forefront of science-based efforts to improve treatment systems for people suffering from drug addictions. We know Tom McLellan will bring this expertise to the country's efforts to reduce demand for illegal substances of abuse," said TRI Board Chair Carolyn Asbury, Ph.D.

"At the same time, we are delighted that Dr. Pechura will now take on the leadership of TRI as it continues to advance the science of addiction treatment to benefit individuals, families and communities affected by this devastating chronic condition. Connie has the intellect, drive and commitment to carry this unique group forward," Asbury added.

Pechura noted that "Over the years, Tom assembled an extremely impressive cadre of senior investigators and other staff at TRI. All of these people are very proud of him, and all of them intend to continue on in the tradition he established," she said. "No matter where Tom McLellan is - at TRI, ONDCP or some other post - he will always be a driving force in addiction and substance use policy."

Dr. Pechura came to TRI as Executive Director in 2007 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) where she directed grant making initiatives in mental health and addiction, as well as leading the Human Capital Portfolio of RWJF's scholars and fellows programs. Other past positions include the Institute of Medicine/ National Academies of Science, where she directed the Board on Neuroscience and Behavioral Health and IOM studies in a variety of health science policy areas.
