Hi

Thank you to all those people who have contacted me about the new WGSN service. I received 11 responses and decisions seem to be divided as follows:

- 5 will not be subscribing to the new service & conditions

- 3 are undecided but lack of funding is the main stumbling block

- 3 have subscribed, although 1 respondent has renegotiated their licence [see further information below]

Given the point Nicola made in her posting to this list this afternoon, it might be too late for a collective response from ARLIS. However, I've summarized below the points made by the respondent who renegotiated their licence, in case it is of use to you for your institution.

- Several of the clauses in the commercial licence were unsuitable for educational purposes, therefore an educational licence was negotiated with considerable effort. It's not clear if this will become a standard one offered to other libraries in the future.

- Unless you have a proxy server, access can only be on campus. Maybe ARLIS members can individually press for future WGSN to be Shibboleth-compliant?

- The price quoted to people has varied but the standard one now seems to be £3000 plus VAT; the recommendation is to haggle further

It will be interesting to learn in the coming months how many libraries took up the new WGSN subscription and how they've found the service, as well to see how WGSN adjust their pricing, licence and access terms in the future.

Kind regards,
