IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON

CENTRE FOR TRANSPORT STUDIES and DIGITAL ECONOMY CENTRE

2x PhD Studentships in Transport and the Digital Economy

Applications are invited for up to 2 PhD studentships working in the area transport and the
digital economy. These studentships form part of a co-ordinated PhD research programme
under the auspices of the Imperial College Digital Economy Centre, and will be based jointly in
the Centre for Transport Studies and the Imperial College Business School.

The first studentship is concerned with modelling of activity behaviour in virtual environments.
Virtual environments are becoming increasingly significant as arena in which individuals
undertake economic, social and other activities. The objective of this work is to develop
statistical methods for characterisation and modelling of activity participation and travel
behaviour in virtual environments and to develop methods to enable data from virtual
environments to be used to enhance models of conventional activity and travel behaviour.

The second studentship is in the area of the personalisation of location based services. The
objective of this work would be to develop appropriate statistical methods for the
characterisation and estimation of relevant aspects of individual taste and preference (e.g., for
modes of travel or destination activities) using a combination of static and dynamic data
sources and to develop methods and market models whereby this information could stimulate
the creation of novel location based services.

Funding is available for UK and EU fee status applicants. For UK applicants, the studentships
cover fees c. £3.5K and a stipend of up to £18k per annum. EU applicants are eligible for full
funding if they have spent a minimum of three years studying or working in the UK
immediately before taking up the award.

The Centre for Transport Studies comprises eight academic staff and a vibrant community of
over 50 doctoral students and post doctoral researchers undertaking research across a broad
range of topics including transport demand modelling, transport policy and regulation,
transport operations, transport and the environment, transport safety, intelligent transport
systems, railway operations and management, air transport operations and control, and
maritime logistics. Further information can be found on the Centre's website at
www.imperial.ac.uk/cts.

Applicants for the studentship should have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class
honours degree or equivalent, in a relevant aspect of economics, mathematics, statistics,
engineering, geography or other strongly quantitative discipline. A Master's degree in a
relevant subject would be advantageous but is not essential.
