The symposium is now also taking registrations.  Registrations may be completed online.  Colleagues considering attending this years symposium are advised that places are limited.  Brief details of the symposium are set out below.  Further details are available via the website.

EWODOR (the European Working Group on Drugs Oriented Research) was established in 1983 as the "scientific wing" of the European Federation of Therapeutic Communities (EFTC - http://www.eftc-europe.com/).  Although it now has a much wider membership, it remains focused upon recovery and is probably one of the oldest and best established network of addiction researchers anywhere in Europe.  Currently, there are around 100 members from most EC states.  The network holds a small symposium every year with the intention of bringing together people from the research community and people from the practitioner community with an interest in recovery and self-help approaches to treatment (particularly but not exclusively, TCs).  This is the first time in its 26 year history that EWODOR has held its symposium in the UK and it will be Scottish Addiction Studies' 25th birthday (there will be cake!!!).

Recovery Careers: the quality of care and life 12th International EWODOR Symposium University of Stirling, Scotland: 19th - 21st October 2009

In current substance abuse treatment, post-modern concepts such as quality of care and life after care, are clearly linked to recovery careers. Former and current users of treatment facilities depend for their recovery on the quality of the treatment system and ongoing support in the world around them. This symposium: Recovery Careers: the quality of care and life is the 12th initiative of the European Working Group on Drugs Oriented Research (EWODOR), a network of addiction researchers closely aligned to the European Federation of Therapeutic Communities (EFTC). The programme of the symposium will not only examine the story of the crisis and rejuvenation of the European therapeutic community movement but will also explore the ideological and methodological background to this remarkable development. More importantly, the symposium will consider the successful life careers of former users and examine what can be learnt from quality of care and life research in other fields. The symposium, will contain a mix of plenary presentations, panel discussions and and workshop sessions.
