May I bring this to the attention of potential PhD students or tutors... NEW BIAD PhD STUDENTSHIPS As a result of further funding success, we have several more studentships to offer to outstanding candidates. These are BIAD studentships for full-time PhD study. They consist of tuition fees and a maintenance allowance, and are available for October 2009 entry. Applicants are welcome from any country and from any discipline. We welcome proposals for any research topic within our expertise to supervise. For a full list of subject areas and how to apply, please see: http://www.biad.bcu.ac.uk/research/site/pages/studentships_studyarea.php There is no specific deadline for applications, but shortlisting will take place in the last week of August, and interviews (in person or by telephone/video) early in September for enrolment in October. In the first instance please contact the co-ordinators listed within the various subject centres. CONTEXT The Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) is one of the UK's major institutions for art, design and architecture education, with nearly 4000 students at all levels from undergraduate through to PhD. In the UK's recent Research Assessment Exercise, 80 per cent of submitted research was recognised as of international quality, with 30 per cent of research recognised as world-leading. Underpinned by this strong research base, BIAD is also a leading UK provider of doctoral training with an exemplary record of successful completions over the past decade. There is an established doctoral programme arising from the pioneering Research Training Initiative, and training which includes a PG certificate in research methods as well as collaborative doctoral training in design. BIAD is one of only a handful of new universities in the UK to hold an AHRC Block Grant Partnership for masters and doctoral studentships, and has already awarded several AHRC and BIAD studentships for entry to the doctoral programme this year. I will be pleased to offer advice about any aspect of these studies. For students contemplating entry to the programme in September 2010, I will also be pleased to discuss potential applications at any time during the year.
