But to keep it in perspective we did not have antibiotics for the complications, housing conditions were of a lower standard often more people per household, hygiene was poorer so it is extremely unlikely that we will ever see anything on that scale again. I believe we have on average 4000 deaths per year in the UK from influenza so to date this has been quite mild and just an unseasonal flu epidemic. As for having the vaccine, probably not. First I hate the sharp pointy things and I have only ever had flu once so I believe the risk to be low. If I am still working around the NHS then I think it will be my duty to have it, we shall see. On the bright side I should get some work out of it. Remember too that the 1918/1919 outbreak was an H1N1 strain - and killed millions of young and healthy people. Antiviral treatment hasn't progressed a huge way since then, at least for flu. The counterargument would be for you consider what you would do if you edit the word "flu" and put in the word "measles", for example. As a reasonably healthy person ( half a day off sick in the last 21 years), I think I'd have it, once I know that the vaccine is safe and effective. Should we poll the readers of this list and see who would and who would not take up the offer of the vaccine?
