This does sound a fascinating and multi-faceted question to explore, and I will be interested to see how it proceeds.
However, I suspect that Tolkien was referring more to the modern images of knights, priests and damsels than to the actual examples in situ. Do you have the actual reference? It sounds more like something Chesterton might have said.
