CFP: LOVING THE L WORD: TELEVISION FANS AND QUEER PLEASURES

Deadline: August 20, 2009.

For a collection of essays on the final season of the Showtime series THE L WORD, I seek reflections on the series’ place within the pantheon of queer TV, with emphasis on the complete series, its contributions and limitations, its pleasures and disappointments, and above all its fans. The collection is envisioned as a follow-up and companion volume to READING THE L WORD (I.B. Tauris: 2006), and will address such questions as: How will THE L WORD be remembered within queer and mainstream television histories, and by whom? How did the series evolve and develop over the course of six seasons? How has the show been received internationally? How is the narrative being kept alive through franchising, transmedia or multiplatform storytelling, fan communities, etc.? Send proposals for 5000 – 8000 word essays to Dana Heller ([log in to unmask]).
