* Sound and Vision: Collecting, Preserving and Managing Film, Sound and Oral History (15 weeks)
Learn about the historical development of audio visual materials and gain expertise in their preservation and management. You will also develop the skills to set up and undertake successful oral history projects, together with an appreciation of legislative, ethical and moral issues relating to this subject. 

* Outreach and Community Archives (15 weeks)
You will study the public face of archives, how they communicate with the wider community, and the issues and opportunities that outreach raises. There is particular emphasis on working with community archives and their role in preserving and promoting local and community written and oral heritage.  

* Cataloguing in a Digital Age (15 weeks)
This module examines the application of current technology to the description and provision of access to archives.  It considers different methods of describing and cataloguing archives online, including the use of standards, metadata, such as ISAD(G) and Dublin Core, and thesauri.   Students will examine tools and software such as EAD, CALM, and Adlib and will consider the problems and opportunities surrounding interoperability and Web 2.0.

* Skills and Sources for Family and Local History in England (15 weeks)
* Skills and Sources for Family and Local History in Scotland (15 weeks)
Study the location, contents and uses of the principal types of Scottish / English records relating to local and family history and gain an understanding of their social and historical context and research potential.  Topics studied include local administration and records, financial and fiscal records, courts and the police, church records, education and poor relief, harbour and building records, land, property and inheritance.

* Heraldry (15 weeks)
This module begins with the mediaeval origins of heraldry and ends with modern day uses of coats of arms. It looks at key historical changes in the role of heralds and heraldic designs, how to answer enquiries relating to heraldry and the impact of heraldry on historical and genealogical research.

* Scottish Local Government and Records (9 weeks)
This module provides students with an understanding of the Scottish local government system, principally in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the ability to interpret the wide range of  records produced by the creating bodies.  Topics include sheriff courts, education provision, the parish and the poor law, lieutenancy, militia and volunteers, police acts, burgh records and incorporations. 

* Latin for Archivists and Researchers (9 weeks)
In this module you will be introduced to some common phrases, translate simple Latin and find salient points in a Latin document. You will also study some of the main forms of documents that survive as primary sources, for example, charters and deeds.
