GRC Dynamics at Surfaces: registration deadline July 19
Students and Postdocs can receive partial financial support by entering their poster in the Young Investigator Competition.  Don't miss the Dynamics at Surfaces Gordon Conference!

SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT (apologies for cross postings)

The Dynamics at Surfaces Gordon Conference will be held August 9-14, 2009 at Proctor Academy in Andover, NH.   We are writing to bring this conference to your and your students' attention and to remind you that the deadline for the conference registration and for inclusion in the YIC is July 19, 2009.  A conference program is shown at the end of this message.

Given the award of funding from DoE and from Leiden University, we believe that we will be able to provide at least $450 in conference fee reimbursements for each grad student or postdoc who presents a poster and enters the Young Investigator Competition. The three winners of this competition will each give a 20 minute talk (10 minute discussion) at the Thursday evening session.  Anyone wishing to enter the Young Investigator Competition should send an email message as such to Vice Chair Geert-Jans Kroes at [log in to unmask] by JULY 19, 2009.

More information can be found at http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2009&program=dynamics.  Registration now is helpful to our planning.

There may be additional funding available for the following programs:
1) Underrepresented Minorities in the US - graduate student, postdoc, faculty or research scientist - see http://www.grc.org/diversity.aspx.
2) International Diversity Fellowship - non US graduate student or postdoc of an underrepresented demographic outside of US
3) Eastern European or Former Soviet Union - research scientist or faculty
4) Predominantly Undergraduate Institution - research scientist or faculty
Please contact the chair, Sylvia Ceyer ([log in to unmask]) if you or someone known to you is interested in any of the programs 2-4 above.  Funding is available on a first come - first served basis.  I would be happy to issue invitations to anyone that you might know who falls into one of these categories.

CANOE TRIP EXCURSION ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12
On Wednesday afternoon of the conference, please join us on a canoe trip. We have reserved 2-person canoes from the Contoocook River Canoe Company (http://www.contoocookcanoe.com/rentals_cont.html), located a short drive from Proctor Academy. The trip is a 2 mile paddle to a beach where you can use a swing rope to drop yourself in the water, or sunbathe, and a 2 mile paddle back, and you can do this all while discussing science. Departure will be shortly after lunch at 1:30 pm and we should be back by 5 pm. The fee is $15-25 per person, payable in cash at the conference (the exact fee will be announced at the conference).  We have ensured that a fair number of people can be accommodated but room is limited and participation is on a first-come, first-served basis. To sign up, send an email to Geert-Jan Kroes ([log in to unmask]) indicating your name, and whether you are willing to drive yourself and other participants in the 17 mile drive to CRCC.  Please indicate how many other participants you can accommodate.

We hope to see you and your students and postdocs at the conference!

Best Regards,
