ATRiuM, University of Glamorgan, Cardiff, September 18th 2009
From Coal House to Dr Who, South Wales has played host to a range of quality television of late, and this one-day Symposium at ATRiuM turns due attention to the BBC’s BAFTA Award winning sitcom Gavin and Stacey.
Andy Medhurst (author of A National Joke: Popular Comedy and English Cultural Identities) will open the Symposium with a paper entitled ‘Far East and Wild West: Mapping Comic Traditions in Gavin and Stacey’, and Welsh media journal Cyfrwng will host the closing event.
Papers are invited on, though not at all restricted to, the following topics:
Humour and the Celtic nations
Welsh identity and the sitcom
Regionality and the sitcom
The contemporary sitcom form
Representations of gender and the sitcom
The deadline for 500 word proposals is Friday 12th June 2009.
