TRAINING NEWS
In the current financial climate, training is an area that organisations can either view as an opportunity to boost the skills and morale of staff and therefore a necessary cost or as an area of unnecessary cost, and therefore an area to cut in the budget. Aslib would like to help your professional development and enhance the skills you have, whilst providing your organisation with cost effective training solutions. These are two of the ways Aslib can support you and your organisation:

JUNE COURSES IN BRIEF:
KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT: AN INTRODUCTION, Wednesday 17, £260+VAT(£325+VAT) http://www.aslib.com/training/3/01.html
This seminar will give you an understanding of what knowledge management is, how it has emerged from several key strands of management thinking and a useful review of many of the initiatives that can and are being implemented. Perhaps most importantly it will encourage you to respond positively to the opportunity and the challenge represented by this subject. If the leading writers are correct about its significance for this century, can you afford not to?

BUILDING AND DEPLOYING A CORPORATE TAXONOMY, Friday 19, £280+VAT(£350+VAT)
http://www.aslib.com/training/4/06.html
A Corporate Taxonomy is the backbone of an organization’s information architecture. Whether the focus is on records management, document management or knowledge management, a Corporate Taxonomy is key to effective storage and retrieval. A Corporate Taxonomy is different from a subject taxonomy in that it is a taxonomy of business activities. Corporate Taxonomies are therefore specific to an organisation and have to be custom-built. This interactive workshop uses a blend of presentation, discussion and practical exercises to explain the purposes of a Corporate Taxonomy and to introduce delegates to technologies, techniques and tools for building and deploying them.

BRITISH OFFICIAL PUBLICATIONS, Tuesday 23, £260+VAT(£325+VAT)
http://www.aslib.com/training/1/02.html
This course will answer these questions:

What exactly is a white paper?
How is draft legislation examined and passed into law?
What are statutory instruments and how are they examined?
What is the difference between parliament and government?

USING EXCEL SPREADSHEETS TO MANAGE A LIBRARY BUDGET, Thursday 25 (am), £150+VAT (£187.50+VAT) http://www.aslib.com/training/2/16.html
What this course intends is to demonstrate how you can use Excel spreadsheets to manage your library budgets. To compare what you estimated you would spend which what you actually spent. To enable you to know at a moment's notice where you are at any point in time with your actual and newly predicted spend and not have to spend ages doing a manual reforecast. Common and more complex Excel formulas will be explored to make your professional life easier and to automate as much as possible. It is not intended to be a book-keeping course, but is aimed at the average library manager who is too busy to spend ages on budget management but for whom it is important they can lay their hands on vital, up to-date information without having to have a major trawl through past invoices and catalogue records to try and work out where they are in the spending stakes.

NEGOTIATING ONLINE SUBSCRIPTIONS, Thursday 25 (pm), £150+VAT (£187.50+VAT)
http://www.aslib.com/training/2/08.html
It is tough out there at the moment. We all need to make an impression on our employers and one way we can achieve this is to save money. It is often awkward talking about money and this session gives practical guidance on how to broach the subject with the publisher. This session is aimed at anyone who has to deal with online resource renewals, new subscriptions or cancellations. The workshop provides practical tips and strategies you can really use. Delegates will be able to learn from the experience of the presenter as well as have the opportunity to discuss their own experiences.

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE, Tuesday 29, £260+VAT (£325+VAT) http://www.aslib.com/training/3/04.html
Information Architecture (IA) involves understanding your content and your users in the context of your business and applying that understanding to the design and structure of your online information spaces, whether intranet, website or other online content system. This one-day introduction will explore the fundamentals of IA and good usability design. It will involve a blend of presentation, discussion and practical exercises that can be taken back and applied within your own organisations. We'll be looking at what Bob Bater, in his Knowledge Architecture course, describes as: a portfolio of practices combining aspects of web design, usability, metadata management and information science to create information spaces that people find both useful and usable.

COURSE VENUES
In 2009, Aslib Training will use an external training room provider etc Venues, one of the UK’s leading providers of training space, and will use two venues in London: Bonhill House and the Hatton. Bonhill House, a prime location, in the heart of the city, is a converted Victorian building with high ceilings and arched windows, flooding each room with natural daylight. The Hatton, a seven-storey training and meeting venue in London's Hatton Garden, provides an exceptionally stylish and vibrant training and conference environment. In 2009, when delegates attend an Aslib training course at these venues, they will benefit from:

- Training rooms that have natural daylight and air-conditioning
- A business centre/facility - internet access for the use of trainers and delegates
- A light continental breakfast on arrival

ONSITE TRAINING SERVICE
All our courses are available as onsite events. If you have 5-6 colleagues that need training in the same subject area, then the most cost-effective way to achieve this is to have a course delivered at your organisation. Our onsite training service can offer of the shelf training as well as bespoke packages. We can also help you plan a conference or event, providing you with all the administrative support you need. Please contact me, if you would like a quote. My contact details are at the bottom of this email.
