** NIHR RESEARCH METHODS TRAINING FELLOWSHIP***

Health Services and Population Research Department, IOP

The Institute of Psychiatry (IOP), a school of King's College London, invites applications for a Training Fellowship in Research Methods funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and based in London.

This three year full time fellowship will be associated with an NIHR Programme Grant exploring the relationship between coronary heart disease and depression in primary care patients. It consists of four inter-related studies; a four year cohort study, two qualitative studies, and a cluster randomised controlled trial of a stepped care intervention to help patients who have depression and coronary heart disease. The Fellow will be involved in all of these studies but will focus on two areas. One will be the development of an instrument to differentiate distress due to cardiac symptoms from depression. This will require integrating outputs from qualitative analyses with quantitative measures of symptomatology and other closed question information. The fellow will thus become familiar with statistical, psychometric and epidemiological concepts involved in the design of instruments, and the interface between qualitative and quantitative data. The other major focus will be on the analysis of clustered randomised controlled trials. This will include dealing with issues such as therapist and practice level effects. Ideally the Fellow will register for a full or part time MSc in Medical Statistics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medical. A further package of training will be also be developed from the Institute of Psychiatry's general teaching programmes on Behavioural Research Methodology run by the Department of Biostatistics, along with modules from the IOP's MSc in Mental Health Services Research. The fellowship will equip the recipient with skills and experience necessary for a career as an applied statistician working in medical and mental health research. The fellow will be encouraged to further his/her research through a PhD and will be supported to apply for a NIHR Doctoral Training Fellowship in the final year.

The successful candidate will have a 1st class honours degree or 2:1 (or non-UK equivalent) in mathematics or statistics. Graduates from other fields who have quantitative skills and some familiarity with statistical ideas, for example science, engineering, computer science or economics graduates may also apply. Applicants with an appropriate technical qualification and work experience, or equivalent qualifications, are also welcomed.

The starting salary will be £27,946 pa inclusive of £2,323 pa London Allowance, depending on qualifications and experience. The fellowship will cover the salary for 3 years, MSc tuition fees up to £4000 pa and up to £1000 pa in research/ further training costs.
