COMPUTERISED COGNITIVE-BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY CUTS SUBSTANCE USE BY A THIRD

An interactive computer program may offer a way to overcome the shortage of trained
cognitive-behavioural therapists; supplementing routine counselling by program access twice a week
reduced substance use by a third at a US counselling service dealing mainly with cocaine and alcohol
users, and post-treatment the gains continued to mount. We still don't know whether this type of
therapy is preferable to alternatives (for longer term outcomes, it may be), but now at least there
is the promise of a short-cut to extending the therapeutic repertoire to include an expert and
accessible version.
