Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Is Wolverhampton axing it's OH course? I understand that the Sheffield course is excellent. They chose not to have NMC validation so no HVs on the course. How important is NMC validation to purchasers? I suspect that for many in OH it is not the be all and end all!

I did my degree at Sheffield and think it was very good. Most topics were relevant to OH but I think with any educational course they do tend to go a little off the mark at times. It was for one day a week over two years.  If you need contacts please contact me off line

Hi All

I am on the course now and I will be the last post grad student. The course is very much geared up towards our colleagues who are health visitors, district nurses etc. I debate with Bashyr on a regular basis the actual merit of the course for OH professionals and find it very frustrating as I am sure Bashyr will tell any of you.

I have spent many hours trying to shoe horn OH principles and practice into assignments where for 12 weeks we have talked about " Baby P and other child neglect cases. Yes it is very sad and I understand the policy behind it but where is the OH. I am pleased that Bashyr has made this stand against the NMC however I do feel sorry for my colleagues who have yet to get on an OH course and may struggle to find a course suitable in the Midlands, and who like myself do not like the idea of distance learning.

Finally I will be on the hunt for inspiration in September as I start my final year, I hope that OH will go out in a blaze of glory from Wolverhampton so please if I am begging for information please help.

Kind regards

Fay

I am sad to hear this but even back in 1991 we complained that there was not enough practical emphasis on the courses.  I stopped at the diploma level and went to the Institute of Occupational Health at Birmingham University to complete a post grad diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and it has been much more useful than sitting with health visitors debating the theory of health....IMO.

I have heard that Wolverhampton is stopping to run it’s OH course,
Having completed their course last year, graduating in February,
I very much enjoyed the course,

Was a little frustrated about the lack of practical links / application to practice,
But a lot of this falls back to the demands of the NMC for part 3 registration.

Many Thanks

Campbell
