CALL FOR
PAPERS: Third Annual EDUC8 Workshop

What are schools for?

Visions
and scenarios for the future of education and schooling

Wroclaw,
Poland, 22 – 24 October 2009

(International
workshop for PhD Students and Early Career Researchers)

Keynote speakers:

David Halpin, Institute of Education, University of
London

Susanne von Below, Federal Ministry of Education and
Research, Germany

In contemporary society, school faces a
crisis of meaning. There are contradictions in the demands made of
schooling today: to prepare workers for the knowledge economy, to achieve
social justice, instil civic values and to develop the individual whilst
offering ‘choice’ to pupils and parents and demonstrating efficiency in the use
of public funds. Schools are subject to increasing scrutiny in terms of
examination performance, curriculum and in many other areas.

The aim of this
workshop is to step back from the everyday issues and pressures of schooling
and education policy to think again about what schools are for and what
they should be for. What does a utopian vision for schooling look
like? And can it help us to make schooling better?

We welcome papers based on empirical
research, educational field experience or political experience in the field of
education, which advance conceptual clarification and present utopian visions
for or from school, defend schooling as it is or consider how changes might
practically be brought about. Aimed at junior researchers and doctoral
students, the workshop will offer the opportunity for dialogue with leading
researchers and peers in a supportive and friendly environment.

Deadline for
applications: 15-July-2009.
