Posted on behalf of Chris Fleet Applications are invited for two AHRC-funded Collaborative PhD Research Studentships, held jointly by the University of Edinburgh Institute of Geography and the National Library of Scotland Map Library, for research on: 'Printing and Mapping the World: the Bartholomew Archive and networks of publishing and geographical knowledge, c.1830-c.1980'. The studentships are full-time and funded for 3 years, will begin in October 2009 and will be jointly supervised by Professor Charles Withers (University of Edinburgh), Mr Christopher Fleet (National Library of Scotland) and Professor David Finkelstein (Queen Margaret University). The Bartholomew Archive (http://www.nls.uk/bartholomew/index.html ) The Bartholomew Archive incorporates the records and correspondence of the leading map and atlas firm of John Bartholomew and Son and predecessors. The Archive contains reference, working and production copies of maps and atlases, copper and glass printing plates and personal papers: collections span the period 1820-2001, with comprehensive business records for the period 1888-1980. Drawing upon these rich materials, two studentship themes have been identified: successful applicants will be encouraged to develop a more particular focus. (1) The Cartographic Conception and Representation of the British Empire The Bartholomew Archive affords unparalleled insight into how the British Empire was constituted cartographically. Here, the focus will be which forms/scales of maps/atlases helped promote notions of empire and to which audiences. (2) Communication Networks in the Geographical Book Trade The Correspondence Books within the Bartholomew Archive offer fine-grained detail of the firm's activities. The focus here will be a publishing and cultural history of the communication networks underpinning Bartholomew's successes in cartographic, geographical, printing and allied book trade circles. How to Apply Intending applicants should have a good undergraduate degree or Masters in geography, English/literary studies, or history. Preference may be given to candidates with expertise/interests in book/map history. You will have experience of relevant research methods (research training is a required element in each year of the studentship). Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, outlining your qualification for the studentship and the names and contact details of two academic referees, to: Professor Charles W J Withers, Institute of Geography, School of Geosciences, University of Edinburgh, Drummond Street, Edinburgh EH8 9XP (mailto:[log in to unmask] ) BY 10 JUNE 2009. Interviews will be held on 30 June.
