Topic: Health inequalites. Their reproduction across generations

Speaker: Professor Denny Vågerö, Stockholm University

Abstract: Modern societies have seen falling mortality rates, changing disease
panoramas and a virtual eradication of poverty in an absolute sense. In spite
of these developments, health inequalites arise de novo in each new
generation. This is true in Sweden in spite of its egalitarian policies and policies
for universal social protection. What are some of the mechanisms by which
health inequalities are reproduced across generations? This question is
discussed and new evidence from Swedish multigenerational data is presented.

Denny Vågerö is a professor of medical sociology. He has worked on health
inequalities at Stockholm University, The Karolinska Institutet, London School
of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Max Planck Institute for Human
Development in Berlin. He was one of the founders of CHESS, Centre for Health
Equity Studies and its director 2000-2008. He was a member of the
Commission on Social Determinants of Health, and is a member of the Royal
Swedish Academy of Sciences and its standing Committee on Health.
