*** NIHR RESEARCH METHODS TRAINING FELLOWSHIP ***

Department of Biostatistics, Institute of Psychiatry

The Institute of Psychiatry (IOP), a school of King’s College London, invites
applications for a Training Fellowship in Research Methods funded by the
National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and based in London.

This three-year full-time training fellowship is focused on statistical
methodology for mental health trials. The fellowship will start in September
2009. The fellow will undertake MSc level training in year 1, by enrolling on a
relevant postgraduate programme, preferably the MSc in Medical Statistics
offered by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
Building on this foundation, in years 2 and 3 the fellow will acquire more
specialised experience in the area of mental health trials. The fellow will be
based in the Department of Biostatistics at the IOP and will be given an
opportunity to increasingly take on responsibilities in the design and analysis of
trials of eating disorders therapies currently undertaken by the NIHR-ARIADNE
programme. In order to learn about trial methodologies the fellow will closely
liaise with the Mental Health and Neuroscience Clinical Trials Unit (MH&N CTU),
a section within the department.

The fellowship will equip the recipient with general skills necessary for a career
as an applied statistician working in medical research. The fellow will be
encouraged to further his/her research through a PhD and will be supported to
apply for a NIHR Doctoral Training Fellowship in the final year.

The successful candidate will have a 1st class honours degree or 2:1 (or non-
UK equivalent) in mathematics or statistics. Graduates from other fields who
have quantitative skills and some familiarity with statistical ideas, for example
science, engineering, computer science or economics graduates may also
apply. Applicants with an appropriate technical qualification and work
experience, or equivalent qualifications, are also welcomed.

The starting salary will be £27,946 pa inclusive of £2,323 pa London Allowance,
depending on qualifications and experience. The fellowship will cover the salary
for 3 years, MSc tuition fees up to £4000 pa and up to £1000 pa in research/
