“Giving Children the Chance to be Children: Memory, Identity and Holidays in the
Countryside” co-funded by CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids)

Applications are invited for a PhD CASE Studentship funded by the ESRC and CHICKS. This
studentship is available from October 2009 and offers the opportunity to work on a
collaborative project between the School of Geography, the University of Exeter Business
School and CHICKS. The project will be conducted within the ESRC-funded Capacity
Building Cluster in Sport, Leisure and Tourism at the University of Exeter, and will
explore the effects of countryside holidays on marginalized young people and the impact
of this on their later lives.

Main duties and responsibilities include:

* conducting an extensive literature review

* quantitative and qualitative data analysis

* writing manuscripts for publication and reports on research progress for CHICKS

* presenting findings orally to academic and non-academic audiences

You will be based in the School of Geography at the University’s Cornwall Campus in
Tremough, and jointly supervised by the University of Exeter Business School in Exeter.
The successful student will be expected to spend a proportion of their time at CHICKS,
based near Tavistock.

Applicants should have a good (First, Upper Second Class, or equivalent) degree in a
humanities or social science discipline, and should have (or be about to complete) a
Masters degree in a humanities or social science discipline. Candidates who have
completed their Masters in an ESRC-accredited programme are especially encouraged to
apply. Applicants are expected to have a good knowledge of current debates in youth
culture, identity and/or social care and to be familiar with qualitative and quantitative
research methods. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, able to work
independently, have excellent communication skills, and prior experience of conducting
independent research.

UK/EU level fees will be paid, together with a maintenance grant that matches the
standard ESRC rate (for 2009/10 this will be £14,940). Please send a copy of your CV,
with the names and addresses of two referees, plus a covering letter outlining your
academic interests and how your skills and experience fit the requirements of this
research project to Laura Taylor ([log in to unmask]).

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Michael Leyshon ([log in to unmask]).

Closing date for completed applications is 19 June 2009. We expect to hold interviews on-
site at CHICKS on 2July 2009.
