A PhD studentship is available as part of a recently-awarded EPSRC 'ABC' project (Airports and Behavioural Change: towards environmental surface access travel).

Overall, the purpose of the ABC research project is to find proactive solutions to the challenge of encouraging better environmental behaviour of individuals to and from airports, in a bid to reduce the carbon intensive nature of the whole system. The project will be led by Dr Tim Ryley at Loughborough University, together with Co-Investigators from Cranfield University (Dr Keith Mason) and the University of Leeds (Prof Jaafar Elmirghani). Further details of the project are available at: http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/ViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/H003398/1. The ABC project is one of a series of projects relating to environmental airport operations.

As part of the ABC project, the Loughborough University PhD student will be conducting a study of surface access travel behaviour and developing choice models from quantitative surveys. The PhD will be supervised by Dr Tim Ryley and Prof Steve Ison within the Transport Studies Group, Department of Civil & Building Engineering, Loughborough University.

The EPSRC PhD studentship is for three years. It covers fees and a tax-exempt stipend (£13,290 for the 2009/10 academic year with cost of living adjustments in years 2 and 3). Tuition fees will be paid at the UK/EU rate. Candidates from countries outside the EU will be liable for the difference between 'home student fees' and 'international student fees'. Applicants will need to submit a completed Loughborough University on-line application form (http://www.lboro.ac.uk/prospectus/pg/essential/apply/index.htm - download the research programme form).

Applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) or a Masters degree in a relevant discipline. Applications will be judged on their academic track record and experience, their proposed research topic relating to airport surface access travel behaviour, and their references. On the application form, please state under 'Additional Information' that the application relates to the EPSRC 'ABC' project.

Informal enquiries are welcome - feel free to contact Dr Tim Ryley via e-mail ([log in to unmask]) or telephone (01509 223422). Further information relating to travel behaviour research undertaken by Dr Ryley is available at: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/cv/staff/profile/145.html; research conducted by the Transport Studies Group can be viewed at: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/cv/research/tsg.html

Preferred Start Date: 1 October 2009
