Residents Against Racism condemns tomorrow's mass deportation plans

'Stop tearing families apart' - Protest announced for GNIB, Burgh Quay, 2 p.m. tomorrow

Irish authorities, in league with their British counterparts, have scheduled a mass deportation to Nigeria on Wednesday 29th April, aiming to bundle dozens of asylum seekers out of the country in the dark of night.

Residents Against Racism spokesperson Rosanna Flynn says "Families will be ripped apart by the deportation. Several of those under threat are fathers of Irish Born Children. Others have lived here for up to six years and have no surviving family in Nigeria. Legal procedures for many are not exhausted. Despite this country's history, the Irish government is increasingly shunning those who wind up on these shores seeking safety, with scant regard for human rights or the very real threats people face in Nigeria."

As a public show of opposition to the deportation, Residents Against Racism members will gather at the Garda National Immigration Bureau on Burgh Quay at 2pm Wednesday, the time when several of those under threat have been told to report; others facing forced removal will be rounded up from locations around the country and brought to Dublin.

In a joint arrangement with British immigration authorities, a so-called ‘Ethnic Charter Flight’ will be routed from London, via Dublin (PV007) at 18.00 departing to Lagos, Nigeria (PV008) at 21.00.
