Ph.D. Studentship in Contemporary Russian and East European history

Suitably qualified candidates are invited to apply for a 3-year Ph.D.
studentship in contemporary (20th century) Russian and East European
history, to start October 2009 or sooner. The studentship is funded by the
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) through the Centre for Russian,
Central and East European Studies (CRCEES), a consortium of Scottish and
English higher education institutions in which the University of Nottingham
is a major partner (http://www.gla.ac.uk/crcees/).

Based in the School of History, University of Nottingham, the award-holder
will be affiliated to the CRCEES research network, and be able to
participate in its workshops, seminars, international summer schools and
other collaborative activities The award-holder will also be a member of the
Nottingham Institute of Russian and East European Studies (NIREES).

The successful applicant will have an M.A or M.Sc. degree as well as a 1st
or good Upper 2nd class B.A. degree in history or a cognate discipline, a
research interest in an area falling within the expertise of relevant
members of staff in the School of History, and appropriate language
competencies. Preference may be given to candidates whose proposed research
addresses one or more of CRCEES’ priority themes (see:

The **eligibility criteria** to apply for this studentship are set by the
ESRC and state that full awards (fees plus maintenance support) are
available only to citizens of the United Kingdom or other EU citizens who
have been resident in the UK for at least three years. EU citizens not
ordinarily resident in the UK may apply, but are eligible to receive funding
towards fees only. Non-EU citizens who have settled status, i.e. have been
living and working, but not studying full-time, in the UK for three years
