Dear
Many thanks for your email.
The response from PSCI has been fantastic and I’m delighted there are so
many scientists who are interested in TV opportunities.
So where do we go from here? Well, if you want to promote yourself, your
passion and your expertise to over 1000 TV researchers, commissioners &
development producers – including the ones who are looking for
charismatic scientists (as per the results of my recent survey) – do what
other experts have done and register on findaTVexpert.com.
In a nutshell, findaTVexpert gives experts who want to be considered for
TV&Media opportunities the chance to showcase their expertise and any
projects they’re working on to the industry – and it gives members
of the media who are hungry for ideas & inspiration (primarily TV but also
radio and print journalists) a fast and easy way of finding experts to comment
on a subject or be part of a show.
Experts create a searchable
profile (incl CV details) and I promote the experts – and
findaTVexpert – to the industry on a weekly basis, meet with development
producers, issue press releases, etc. (I’ll forward a copy of my latest
update to the industry so you can see what I mean. Or click here
and have a look at past newsletters.)
Having spent 15 years producing and developing programmes
(BBC’s Don’t Get Done Get Dom, Changing Rooms, Ready Steady Cook,
etc), launching and running channels (London TV, Today on 3 Live) and looking
for experts (click here for my
CV), I felt this was a service the experts needed and the industry
wanted. Because if you’re an expert and you’re busy with your
career, you don’t have time to contact over 1000 TV production companies
to find out if anyone is interested in the work you’re doing - or working
on a programme idea that requires your expertise. And on the programme making
side of things, although there are websites that can help you find production
staff, celebrity agents, actors & actresses, filming locations, audience
members, etc, when it comes to experts you have to start from scratch.
So in September 07 I turned down a 10 months TV contract to get findaTVexpert
off the ground and bridge the gap between the professionals and the programme
makers. And it’s working. Members of the media are registering to search
the site (from the BBC to Zig Zag Productions and everyone in between) and experts are being found
and booked for TV, Radio & Press interviews, screentests, pilots,
exploratory chats, etc. The list is as long as it is varied and includes
Pharmacists, Debt Doctors, Career Strategists, Stockbrokers, Psychologists,
Medical Historians, Diamond Graders, Horticulturalists, etc. For testimonials from
experts & the industry, click here
or read the Daily
Telegraph article about John Rennie who was spotted on findaTVexpert by a
commissioning editor at the BBC and hired to co-present a new property series.

call on Tuesday, when I’m ‘officially’ back in the
office. And if you want to join the team of experts straightaway (and be
featured in next week’s update to the industry and promoted specifically
to the producers who are looking for charismatic scientists) here’s the
link: http://www.findatvexpert.com/candidate/register.asp
(Registration is currently £100 p/year but will be increasing to £150 on the 28th
of April.)
Best wishes – and Happy Easter.

I recently conducted a survey among over 1000 TV researchers,
commissioners,
development producers, etc to find out what kind of experts they'd like
to
see more of.
In and among requests for survival experts, historians and specialists
cooks
were several requests for "charismatic scientists".
So if there are any scientists interested in TV, please give me a call.
Best wishes - and Happy Easter.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] NESTA/RSC synthetic biology project - invitation to
tender
Dear All,
The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) and
the
Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) are seeking potential suppliers, with
expertise in innovation, science communication and/or facilitation, to
help
design and run a series of workshops that will engage an
interdisciplinary
cross-departmental group of academics who are interested in developing
new
research ideas in synthetic biology. This is an exciting new project
that
looks to get researchers from different disciplines communicating with
each
other!
If you are interested in seeing a copy of the tender document, please
email
me asap ([log in to unmask]). The deadline for responses to the
tender is 6 May with interviews on the 29 May.
For those who are interested but feel they may need to work in
partnership
to cover all the appropriate skills needed for this tender, we'd be
happy to
consider joint bids and though we cant promise, we may be able to
provide
help for those looking for a partner to work with.
Happy to answer any questions by email or phone.
