We have a zoo licence to keep a collection of live animals. I am not sure about licensing for just a few cockroaches for educational purposes. It might be best to contact London Zoo. The contact is Paul -Pearce Kelly and his E-mail address is paul.pearce-kelly@zsl or phone 02074496400.

I think that there is such a public display at Liverpool World Museum.
No personal experience I'm afraid!

Hi Leslie
Hissing Cockroaches -
Like most roaches, they seem to manage very well on large doses of neglect. Certainly too much care (in terms of regular spraying and lots of fresh fruit) seems to result in a heavy commensal mite load - not the best feature if using them for handling! The newborn roaches are inclined to roam, so take care over designing their accomodation.
I've not had any problems using them on occasional family activity days or school visits (the usual "wash your hands before eating sandwiches" applies). We don't keep them in the museum (they come in from home) and they're not on show in the galleries, so I've never looked into the licencing aspect.
I've asked Dave Waterhouse to join the NatSCA discussion list so he can contribute to this thread - he had quite a bit of experience with insects and the public when he was at Bristol Zoo.

Hi all,

Not a problem, but a request.

What are the rules/regulations regarding keeping and using live insects in a museum environment? We are considering using something like the giant hissing cockroach in some of our educational workshops, so any advice regarding licencing (I have no idea if this applies!), care, H&S, practicalities, etc. would be fantastic.

Thanks!

Leslie
