Early Medieval mount found in Yorkshire should stay in the UK, says Culture Minister
Culture Minister, Barbara Follett, has placed a temporary export bar on an unusual animal-shaped copper alloy mount found in North Yorkshire. The discovery is very significant and is likely to be a product of Viking activity and perhaps evidence of links between Dublin and York. This will provide a last chance to raise the money to keep the mount in the United Kingdom.

MUSEUMS ASSOCIATION

Taylor backs active federations in nations and regions
The MA is to host a meeting with representatives from museum federations in Wales, Scotland and the English regions. MA director Mark Taylor said he would like to see active federations in the nations and regions...

The invitation-only meeting, which takes place this Friday at the Women's Library in London, will provide a chance for representatives to discuss ways in which the MA and the federations might work more closely together.

"We are very supportive of federations, and there is nothing we would like more than to see active federations in the nations and regions," said Taylor. "They provide good networking and training opportunities for museum professionals and, particularly in England with the demise of the area museum councils and more recently the MLA regional agencies, their role is more important than ever before."

Taylor will also be attending a meeting of The Federation of Museums and Art Galleries of Wales at the Media Resource Centre in Llandrindod Wells on Wednesday 29 April, which will focus on the future direction of the Welsh Federation. Rachael Rogers, the MA's councillor in Wales, will be speaking at the event.

"The Welsh Federation has revived in recent years," said Taylor. "And we hope it will become stronger and more successful as time goes on. It has done a lot of work with CyMAL on the national museum strategy, and we think it could now play more of a role in training, supporting the AMA, and advocacy. Welsh museums are suffering financially, and anything we can do to help them make their case in these straitened times would be good."

CHARITIES AND VOLUNTEERS

Third sector response to Budget 2009
WCVA has welcomed the steps announced to tackle economic inactivity, and has encouraged a stronger Government partnership with voluntary organisations to support people back into the workplace. WCVA Chief Executive Graham Benfield OBE commented: 'In the current climate, people facing the greatest challenges getting into work are going to need more support. 'Our message is that voluntary organisations are very often best placed to work with economically inactive groups and help them make progress towards employment.'

Charitable Incorporated Organisation
Trustee news has regularly reported on the progress of the CIO, including the recent consultation. Based on the responses, the Government is to amend its plans for the rules on the CIO in time to introduce the new legal form in April 2010. This will come as a big disappointment to charities and advisors alike, but many problems were identified by the influential Charity Law Association, which said the draft regulations relied too heavily on company law and would be too complicated for small charities.

City museum wants docks artefacts
A new museum telling the history of Cardiff is looking for artefacts from the city's docklands ahead of its opening in the summer. Curators of the Cardiff Story, at the old library building in The Hayes, have chosen the docks history as the first theme. They are looking to complete a 3-D model set in 1913 when the docks were at their peak. But they are looking for objects, items, photos and stories. Project officer Victoria Rogers said: "Museum objects don't have to be worth a lot of money, nor be particularly old. What we're really interested in are things that tell a story about Cardiff and its people."

Builders find Auschwitz message
Builders working near the site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp have found a message in a bottle written by prisoners, museum officials say. The message, written in pencil and dated 9 September 1944, bears names, camp numbers and home towns of seven young inmates from Poland and France. At least two survived the Nazi camp, an Auschwitz museum official said. The bottle was buried in a concrete wall in a school that prisoners had been compelled to reinforce. The school's buildings, a few hundred metres from the camp, were used as warehouses by the Nazis, who wanted them protected against air raids. An Auschwitz museum spokesman said the authors of the note "were young people who were trying to leave some trace of their existence behind them".
