Guide to BME cancer resources. Macmillan Cancer Support is in the process of producing a catalogue of the resources they publish to help guide BME patients coping with cancer. The majority of the resources to be included in the catalogue will be available in a number of languages.
Overcoming language barriers? With more than 300 languages spoken in London alone planning effective interpreting services can be vitally important; a recent research article analyses the past two Health Surveys for England to measure access to interpreting services on the NHS by non-English speaking patients.
Another article has also recently been published regarding the use of an Asian languages rheumatology telephone helpline.
“They’re more like ordinary stroppy British women” Research into the attitudes and expectations of midwives towards UK-born ethnic minority women is quite rare; a recent study found that maternity care professionals appeared to equate the needs of ethnic minority women with those of the general population; this the authors conclude has positive implications for care provision, although some unconscious stereotypical views were also evident amongst the professionals.
