Professor David Edgerton (Imperial College London):

 

"Winston Churchill as inventor and product champion”

 

 

It is well-known that Winston Churchill was an enthusiast for war machines of all sorts. It is less well known that he was an inspirer perhaps even inventor of particular ones, like the tank. It is hardly known at all that he was inventing again while in government between 1939 and 1940. He launched an extraordinary earth-cutting machine which he hoped would restore power to the offensive. In addition Churchill was a tenacious champion of many other machines, many of which have not had the attention they deserved, mainly because they do not fit the standard narratives of science and technology at war, narratives written by opponents of Churchill and his personal adviser, Frederick Lindemann.
