Thanks Matej and Tom. I'd already found this, but not the
answer to my specific query. Still, it's amazing what you can find on the
web! The sign I'm looking at, incidentally, is very similar to the S
cancelled by a flourish, which is listed in Cappelli 's 'Dizionario di
Abbreviature' p.336 as standing for 'solidi, sunt or sive'.
Only 'solidi' might make sense in the context, which seems to refer
to a deposit: 'i(n)
pignori pro [solidi sign?] xxxx grossorum'

This is not strictly relevant to
the list, but can anyone help me with a query about Venetian money.
I'm trying to decipher a conventional sign in a document, and it could stand
for 'soldi', but only if there was a unit of money called 'soldi di
grossi'. I know there were soldi and grossi, but were there soldi
di grossi?
