Apologies for cross posting. ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Colleagues, even on behalf of my colleagues Conveners F. Guzzetti, M. Parise, and P. Reichenbach, I am pleased to advertise the following scientific sessions: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Session B4 @ VII Forum GEOITALIA 2009, Rimini, Italia, 9-11 September 2009 Topic: "Innovative approaches for landslide hazard evaluation and risk mitigation" Convener: G. Iovine Co-Conveners: M. Parise & P. Reichenbach http://www.geoitalia.org/index.php?action=doc_detail&doc_id=983&folder_id=142 DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS = 16 May 2009 Topic of the Session B4: Slope movements are among the main causes of life losses and economic damage in Italy, as well as in the rest of the world. In general, even though landslide studies have nowadays reached a high level of quality, there is still a need to refine some methodological aspects in the field of the landslide research. Moreover, in Italy any action of environmental management should properly consider the diffuse occurrence of slope movements, their notable recurrence, and the related effects on the anthropogenic environment. Starting from these considerations, the session aims at stimulating the debate on innovative results in landslide susceptibility / hazard analysis, and on risk mitigation approaches. In particular, contributions on the following topics would be welcome: a) triggering mechanisms of different types of landslide; b) geomorphologic, dynamic and evolutive characteristics of landslide phenomena; c) criteria for thematic mapping, concerning: advanced techniques and modelling for evaluating landslide affected areas; techniques for landslide hazard evaluation; new approaches for landslide risk evaluation and mitigation. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Session B7 @ VII Forum GEOITALIA 2009, Rimini, Italia, 9-11 September 2009 Topic: "Landslide forecasting" Convener: F. Guzzetti Co-Conveners: G. Iovine & M. Parise http://www.geoitalia.org/index.php?action=doc_detail&doc_id=986&folder_id=142 DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS = 16 May 2009 Topic of the Session B7: Landslides are ubiquitous geomorphological phenomena with potential catastrophic consequences. In Italy, a country for which detailed information exists, landslide mortality can be higher than that of any other natural hazard. Predicting landslides is a difficult task of scientific interest and of societal relevance that may help saving lives and protecting individual properties and collective resources. The session focuses on innovative methods and techniques to predict landslide occurrence, including the location, time, size, destructiveness of individual and multiple slope failures. All landslide types are considered, from fast moving rock falls to rapid moving debris flows, from slow moving slides to very rapid moving rock avalanches. All geographical scales are considered, from the local to the global scale. Of interest are contributions investigating theoretical aspects of natural hazard predictions, with emphasis on landslide forecasting, including conceptual, mathematical, physical, statistical, numerical and computational problems, and applied contributions demonstrating, with examples, the possibility or the lack of a possibility to predict individual or multiple landslides, or specific landslide characteristics. Of particular interest are contributions aimed at: evaluating the quality of landslide forecasts, comparing the performance of different forecasting models, using landslide forecasts in operational systems, and investing the possibility to exploit new or emerging technologies e.g., monitoring, computational, Earth observation technologies, to improve our current ability to predict landslides. We anticipate that the most relevant contributions will be collected in the special issue of an international journal. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * We would be glad if you considered to submit an abstract concerning your studies on the cited topics at our Sessions. Abstracts must be directly submitted via the meetings' WebPages at http://www.geoitalia.org/index.php?action=folder_list&folder_id=103 The presenting Authors must register on-line at the mentioned website. They will receive the personal keys (ID and password) which they will use for submitting the abstract/s. After the Conferences, the Authors will be invited to submit papers, which will be considered for publication (through standard peer-review) in a guest-edited Special Issue of a relevant International Journal. More details can be found at the mentioned websites (see e.g. Format & Instructions for Authors). Kind regards, Giulio Iovine ps.
