Book and Screen Seminars 2008-2009 29 April 2009, 3 - 6 pm Room ST 276 Heinrich Mann's Professor Unrat (1904) and Joseph von Sternberg's film Der blaue Engel (1930) Introduced by Godela Weiss-Sussex (IGRS) What does Heinrich Mann's critical portrayal of Wilhelmine society have in common with the film that launched Marlene Dietrich's career? Is Der blaue Engel an adaptation of Professor Unrat, or is it 'a film against Heinrich Mann'? Issues such as these will be considered on the basis of interpretations of the works in their own right.
