Dear all, LONSAS has an information page advising freelance arts educators and employers on the subject of employment status. Much of this will be applicable to other employers and freelance workers in other settings. The page can be found here: http://www.lonsas.org.uk/content.asp?CategoryID=852 Daisy Rothwell Information and Partnerships Officer London Schools Arts Service 25 Kings Terrace, London, NW1 0JP <t> +44 (0) 20 7387 8882 <f> +44 (0) 20 7388 9888 <e> <mailto:[log in to unmask]> [log in to unmask] <w> <http://www.lonsas.org.uk/> http://www.lonsas.org.uk The London Schools Arts Service (LONSAS) is a free information resource and support service funded by Arts Council England to help schools, artists and arts organisations collaborate in delivering creative experiences and achievement across the curriculum. The arts directory offers teachers the tools to search for suitable arts partners according to a wide range of criteria such as key stage, curriculum area or target group. The directory provides artists and arts organisations with a free platform to promote their work to an education audience. <http://www.lonsas.org.uk/> www.lonsas.org.uk _____ -----Original Message----- From: Lisa Kerley [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: 08 April 2009 12:09 Subject: Re: Payment of Freelance Educators, Workshop Facilitators, Interpretors etc I am self-employed but when I lecture at a particular university once or twice a year I am classed as an employee, this is the same for the occasional courses I teach for the WEA. It doesn't seem to be a problem for me, I just pass the payslips to my accountant with all my other invoices and so on and she works out how much tax I need to pay at the end of each financial year taking into account what tax has already been taken by those organisations. Perhaps if you do a self-assessment tax return this is more difficult. it's not that easy being self-employed and we don't have any of the benefit perks of being an employee! The HMRC notes support the point of view suggested by Tehmina and other recent respondents. The consensus seems to be that following guidelines from HM Revenue it is common practice to put regularly used freelancers on the books but one off events can still be suppliers Many thanks Paul No virus found in this incoming message.
