All except step 6 chris. As if this turns out to be the case I'll most
likely be residing at Her Majesty's leisure for failure to comply!

Having done a lot of work in government organizations I must say that
generally the aims of the people who come up with these ideas is very
laudable, but they seem to be so easily seduced by the "consultants" (I
know, I am one, but I have resisted going completely over to the dark side)
suggestions and "solutions", that there seems to be failure to recognize the
impact that some of these ideas have on the public and society as a whole.

ID cards will not stop terrorism, some biometrics MAY help detect some crime
faster, but when it all boils down, we are supposed to be living in a
civilized democratic society although we are only ever a few steps away from
totalitarianism and then the big databases will be used for things we
haven't even imagined yet.

Sorry to be moribund.

Simon Howarth.

Subject: [data-protection] Mr Blunkett and ID Cards

I think I have got Mr Blunkett's idea. Tell me if I am wrong

Step 1: get rid of ID Cards.

Step 2: issue mandatory passports with Biometrics the form of a Card with
chip carrying photo.

Step 3: Grow a database of biometrics (e.g. fingerprints, photos) linked to
name and address

Step 4: Get people to carry passports internally in the UK (so that they
can establish their ID when going to a GP or open a bank account)

Step 5: Tell the world that this Card that isn't an ID Card?

Step 6: Wait for men in white coats....

Cheers

C
