Following our recent RAE success and Institutional Review, the Cardiff
School of Management (to be based from 2010 in a new, state-of-the-art
building in Wales' vibrant capital city, Cardiff) is seeking ambitious,
talented academics to join its department of tourism, hospitality and
events management.

The department is Wales' leading collective of tourism, hospitality and
events management academics and one of the foremost groups in these
fields in the UK. Since UWIC was restructured in 2006, the department
has strived to develop and improve the quality of its awards and provide
a rewarding learning experience for its students. The National Student
Survey 2008 results for our BA Tourism Management recorded overall
satisfaction at 92%, which is one of the highest scores for any
programme in any Higher Education Institution in the UK.

The department's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are
underpinned by a vibrant research environment and the department is home
to the Welsh Centre for Tourism Research (WCTR) which embraces the work
of over 40 doctoral students, seven post-doctoral researchers, three
Professors (Nigel Morgan, Annette Pritchard and Eleri Jones) and a suite
of international research projects across Europe, Africa and the Middle
East. The WCTR was the only tourism research group in the UK to achieve
its own Research Assessment Exercise profile in 2008. Almost two-thirds
of its research was ranked as of international standing, of which a
quarter (25%) was deemed to be world-leading or internationally
excellent. As a result, this places UWIC 6th in the Research Fortnight
Power Rankings for tourism and sports-related studies research in the
UK.

This RAE success has further enhanced the WCTR's widely regarded
international reputation and its credibility amongst its peers. The
Centre has a strong publication catalogue, a growing portfolio of
research activities, a flourishing research environment and a clear
vision to build upon areas of research strength. WCTR is at the centre
of a vibrant international research community and it hosts four Honorary
Professors (Tom Baum, Conrad Lashley, Chris Ryan and Stephen Page) and
visiting scholars from Europe, Africa and Australasia. In addition, WCTR
is co-host of the Critical Tourism Studies Conference Series and has
co-hosted several major international conferences in Wales, Croatia and
Oman, as well as the 2008 ESRC Seminar Series on Tourism and Social
Justice.

WCTR research is inherently interdisciplinary and explores tourism's
role in shaping wider socio-cultural, economic and spatial relations.
Its researchers strive to produce theoretically-informed studies that
engage with professional and policy issues and our research
publications, projects, conferences and seminars address four research
themes:

* Sustainable destination development and marketing (including
place branding, sustainability, human resource planning, service
quality, the application of ICT and the SME economy);

* Social, cultural and spatial policies of inclusion,
citizenship, social justice and poverty alleviation;

* Critical interpretations of the interplay between tourism,
representation, landscape and social structures, experiences and
identities;

* Interpretative and critical modes of tourism inquiry.

Further Job Opportunities at Cardiff School of Management:

We confidently expect to be able to offer additional positions at
Lecturer, Senior and Principal Lecturer and, possibly, Chair level in
the near future, to be in post as early as possible in 2009-10.

The positions are likely to be across the range of our activities -
tourism, hospitality and events, business and management (including
international programmes), information systems, and accounting, finance
and economics. Again, we are keen to have expressions of interest from
people with a passion for teaching and research/or enterprise. We would
also like to hear from people who believe they have something special to
offer the School at Chair level in areas such as Information Systems,
Work-Based Learning and Sustainable Development, but other relevant
fields could be of interest.

For more information and details of how to apply or express an interest,
please email [log in to unmask] Informal discussions about any of the
posts can be arranged by calling Katy Isaacs of the HR Team on 029 2041
6117.
